The Alpe-Adria Trail...

Linking the historic Austrian city of Salzburg with the Adriatic coast in Italy, the famed Alpe-Adria cycle route is like a magical thread, winding its way through some of the most breath-taking scenery and landscapes Europe has to offer.

Through 410 kilometres, you’ll be able to breathe in the sweet alpine air, weave your way around mountains, lush meadows and picture-postcard hillside villages. You’ll also be able to sample incredible regional cuisines and wine.

To say that cycling the Alpe-Adria path is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is an understatement. To take in all the legendary landscapes, the mountains of Carinthia, the spectacular region of South Tyrol that takes you into Italy, and then the Italian flair of the Adriatic coast at the end of your journey… need we say more?

Kuchl, Salzburg

Yes, we probably should but not before we talk about the cycling itself.

Riding through alpine regions and experiencing mountains and valleys and all the ups and downs they can provide, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Alpe-Adria is one for Pantani wannabes only.

However, you don’t have to be a sucker for punishment to enjoy the route, as it’s deceptively easy. When we say easy, we do recommend you have good levels of fitness, but all in all, there isn’t a Passo Gavia or Passo Selvio in sight. In fact, there just aren’t the daunting elevations you’d expect from alpine regions.

The 410km route can be broken up into manageable chunks, which means you could be doing as little as 24 miles per day and as much as 38. As for elevation, one stage provides 1,625ft, so, you could say that the Alpe-Adria is a route truly for people of all skills and levels of cycling.

Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein

You’ll start your journey in Salzburg, with Baroque architecture, impressive culture and history (it’s the birthplace of Mozart, don’t you know) and the UNESCO World Heritage rated Old Town, it’s a great place to begin.

The route takes you through the incredible valleys of the province of Salzburg (including Salzach and Gastein) and Carinthia. This gorgeous region is speckled with stunning lakes and beautiful cities like Villach, famous for its carnival.

However, you’ll also ride through Bad Gastein, world-famous for its slopes and skiing during the winter months, but also stunning bathed in sunlight during the spring and summer. Cliffs cloaked in forests, waterfalls tumbling in between the houses, belle-époque villas, this alpine village has it all. Add in a spa culture that’s second to none and you might not want to leave.

Tarvisio

Tarvisio

Once all the shining brilliance of Austria is behind you, you’ll enter Italy and it’s like nothing has changed – Tarvisio is circled by lakes, ancient forests and mountains.

And as you leisurely travel down through the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, you’ll reach the city of Udine. The gastronomic capital of the region, it also houses Venetian arches, Grecian statues and Roman columns – it’s like a living history tour through the various eras of Italian history.

Finally, you’ll reach the quaint coastal village of Grado. It may not be on the list of best-known resorts, but with the Adriatic shimmering and lapping at the grey-coloured local sand, it’s the perfect place to unwind and kick back after a long but exhilarating ride.

And, for such a small resort, it certainly packs a lot in. Adorably narrow lanes, a medieval centre and thermal baths mean that it's time to get off the bike and enjoy some quality passaeggiata time.

It’s the perfect end to a tour that sees you cycle in the tyre prints of history.
