Italy Bike Tours – Maratona dles Dolomites Itinerary

Day
by day.

Six unforgettable days in the heart of the Dolomites — from a relaxed welcome ride and the legendary Sellaronda to race preparation, iconic mountain passes and the unforgettable Maratona dles Dolomites.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted at the airport by our friendly team and transferred to your beautiful hotel in the heart of the Dolomites.

Take some time to unpack and unwind before we prepare the bikes for a gentle, leg-stretching ride through the lower valley.

As is tradition, our first evening meal will be enjoyed in the hotel restaurant — a perfect opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and share a glass of Prosecco.

Hotel Alpenrose | Arabba

This morning, you’ll wake to the gentle sound of cowbells in the distance. Your first day in the Dolomites begins with a hearty breakfast and — of course — excellent coffee. Then we hop on the bikes to tackle one of the most iconic sections of the Maratona course. Yes — today we ride the legendary Sellaronda.

After the ride, a Finnish sauna and perhaps a well-earned massage await your return, followed by a sumptuous dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Hotel Alpenrose | Arabba

Today we ride toward one of northern Italy’s most legendary climbs: the Passo Falzarego. Those taking part in the longer Maratona course will also have the opportunity to tackle the famously challenging Passo Giau.

After returning to the hotel, it’s time to put your legs up and relax before dinner is served in the hotel restaurant.

Hotel Alpenrose | Arabba

After a relaxed breakfast, we’ll head over to the Expo and registration area for the Granfondo. Here you’ll collect your race number, kit, and everything you need for the big day. The Expo is well worth exploring too, with plenty of great discounts on offer.

In the afternoon, we’ll head out for a two-hour ride, giving you the chance to experience the first climb of the Maratona and to work with our professional guides (ex pros) on refining your descending technique.

Hotel Alpenrose | Arabba

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for. After an early breakfast and some final preparations, you’ll set off on one of the greatest rides in the world. Our team will be in place throughout the course, providing support and refreshments whenever you need them.

Hotel Alpenrose | Arabba

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. We’ll be on hand to assist with your onward travel — or, if you wish to extend your adventure, we’d be delighted to arrange a few more days of beautiful cycling in Italy.

Want to stay a little longer? Add extra days in the Dolomites, Venice or elsewhere in Italy and we’ll help you create the perfect extension before or after the Maratona.

The general road conditions in the Dolomites are very good but can be affected by weather events. During Maratona week there are many cyclists on the roads and there’s very much a cycling party vibe. The roads are still open to the public until the day of the Gran Fondo, so the roads are shared with car owners and bikers.

Expect rich, comforting dishes made with local ingredients like mountain cheeses, cured meats, mushrooms, polenta and fresh pasta. Must-try dishes include Canederli, apple strudel and Pizzoccheri — buckwheat pasta with potatoes, cabbage and melted cheese.

Riding in the Dolomites means long, sustained climbs, fast technical descents and spectacular high-mountain roads. Good fitness, confident bike handling and sensible pacing are important. Conditions can change quickly at altitude, so we recommend carrying a light layer and rain jacket on every ride.
