Stages of your Tour
Lucca To San Miniato
49km | 330m Elevation
After completing the bike set-up and the trip briefing including the safety rules, we will leave for this first stage, characterized by the numerous historical and religious buildings that we will meet along the way. We will start with a beautiful bike ride in the walls of Lucca. Tonight’s accommodation is in a hotel in the town of San Miniato.
San Miniato - Tuscany
San Miniato To San Gimignano
51km, 830m elevation
Truly splendid route. Shortly after San Miniato, the path that winds along the hilly ridges of the Val d'Elsa enchants with its extraordinary beauty. The arrival in San Gimignano by bike is spectacular, emerging from a small road, the medieval towers surprise with their timeless charm. A walk in the village is a must. Tonight you will stay in a wonderful country farmhouse overlooking the Tuscan hills of San Gimignano.
San Gimignano - TuscanySan Gimignano To Siena
68km, 1000m elevation
We have just left San Gimignano, and you already want to look back to admire it once more, before it disappears behind the hills. All of a sudden, Monteriggioni emerges behind a small hill with its legendary crown of towers. The path leading to the castle is dotted with ups and downs, and links a series of ancient hamlets where time seems to have stopped. The entrance to Siena is triumphal, really exciting. We will walk the last few meters to get to Piazza del Campo to fully enjoy the excitement. What a conquest! Night in a farmhouse outside Siena.
Siena - TuscanySiena To rapolano
66km, 1090m elevation
The landscape changes again; we are in the realm of dirt roads and the famous Crete Senesi, literally the ‘clays of Siena'. For two million years, an ocean covered these hills, ancient seabed of grey-blue clay, chalk and rock salt, which some compare to the surface of the moon. The landscape is enchanting, thanks to the colours of the earth and the sky, the gentle lines of the valleys and the rows of cypresses that adorn the white streets that seem to have been designed by a painter. Here we are in the heart of Tuscany. Night in a restored fortified granary in the medieval village of Serre di Rapolano.
Rapolano - Tuscany
Rapolano to montalcino
60km, 1050m elevation
Between the awesome Crete Senesi and the breathtaking Val d'Orcia, San Giovanni d'Asso marks the halfway to the monumental Montalcino, a military outpost in medieval times, serendipitously located in a fantastically productive grape area, making it the home of two world-class wines, Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. But first the route is crossing the small village of Buonconvento, whose ancient walls date back to 1383. Its name derives from the Latin Bonus Conventus, meaning "happy, lucky place", the perfect place for a refreshment stop, maybe with some good typical food.
Montalcino - Tuscany
montalcino to montepulciano
60km, 1190m elevation
The time has come to immerse yourself in the splendid panoramas of the Val d'Orcia, in which San Quirico and Pienza have a predominant role. The stunning hillside town of San Quirico d’Orcia is mentioned in the oldest book in Western Europe, the Liber Linteus Zagrabiensis (300 BC), and when you glimpse at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pienza, at the eastern most point of the itinerary, you will know that you have at last seen perfect beauty. The last stop is in Montepulciano, famous worldwide for its excellent wines. Our evening will be spent in an organic winery.
Montelpulciano - Tuscany
montepulciano to radicofani
40km, 900m elevation
The last stage of this itinerary continues to offer incredible surprises. Monticchiello is a typical medieval village immersed in the Sienese countryside. Following the old Via Francigena, the route winds up the hills of the Val d'Orcia. The final climb that leads to Radicofani, it offers a fantastic panorama, it is the last act of this itinerant and ecological cycling experience. We will return to Florence by private transfer.

Useful information about your holiday
Still Undecided?
This tour, Unexpected Tuscany, is as advertised. Rolling hills with beautiful scenery through charming villages and delicious food at every stop. Our guides, Fausto and Ivan, did all the work, all we did was ride and enjoy. Fausto is on his bike showing us the way while pointing out historical sites, landmarks and potholes. The terrain is up and down, of course, and includes some gravel roads. Fausto finds the best routes according to the situation avoiding traffic and poor road conditions. Ivan follows along with the van and is ready to handle any problem that might come up. We did jump in the van after being soaked by rain once. The rain was expected so Fausto made Ivan ride that day and he drove the van. Even though we had ebikes, my wife and I (65) were tired at the end of each day and ready to relax. Unexpected Tuscany was a great tour and our guides, Fausto and Ivan took fantastic care of us. April was a great time of year, everything was green and there were absolutely no crowds. We had the towns and hotels mostly to ourselves.
